Golgotha's Ancients - To The Strongest - Roman versus German Barbarian

Herewith a quick game of Ancients using To The Strongest rules, see: https://bigredbatshop.co.uk/collections/all/wargames-rules

What I particularly like about these rules, is that they have no measuring, no dice, and are quick to play. All using standard card decks. One will notice this battlefield has no squares demarcated as one sees in many games using these rules - they really are not necessary. In the end it was a Roman victory - beaten by my 6 year old son, again... The Germans had some activation problems and the commander landed up being largely indecisive. As casualties mounted command broke down entirely especially as the Romans started to outflank the barbarians. The idea was that the Germans had decided to attack before the Romans built their wall hence only the watch tower. Indeed, the entire point of the game was just to use the new watchtower. This is a paper model I found online. Miniatures are mostly Esci, Revell and Airfix with some old Atlantic miniatures.

The German barbarian army

The Roman Army.

As can be seen this was a small engagement. I can field three/four times as much.

The indecisive commander with his cavalry. They would merely watch the slaughter as it was wrought by the Romans.

Old Atlantic Romans painted as rather cheesy purple Praetorian Guard - really enjoyed making this Hollywood unit. Two of the miniatures hold Fasces the bundle rods symbolising a magistrates power and later adopted by Italian Fascism and Benito Mussolini.

Roman cavalry also by Atlantic. I have had these miniatures for many years and it is a joy to see them getting to shed some blood for the glory of Rome.

My son as the Roman Commander - old Airfix chariot with Esci crew.
