Golgotha's Games - Horizon Wars - Mech Battle

Herewith, a mech, big stompy robot battle using Horizon Wars by Osprey. This was our first proper game using these rules. Initially I had been very keen on said rules. However after this game I came away being less pleased. I will be putting up a proper review as well as some of the house rules we used. Having said that the game was fun and we had some laughs and I can see the rules appealing to some players, the rules do have some innovative ideas worth considering.

In the interim check out an excellent review here: http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2017/01/review-horizon-wars-osprey-games.html

Painted Mechs used are from EM4, see: https://em4miniatures.com/collections/science-fiction-near-future-miniatures/products/mechs

Infantry are Games Workshop's Epic Space Marines.

Non-painted are unknown to me and I managed to get them cheap on Ebay.

Top view of the game. Marsian/alien planet with asteroid looking rocky debris. Buildings an old toy base and a half a hamster ball as a biome. Forces of Earth on the left, Marsians on the right and top. The idea being that Mars has rebelled from Earth's control and Earth is attempting to regain the planet and crush the rebel Marsian scum.

Forces of the Earth advance. I kept these forces concentrated which paid off in the end.

Marsians attempt to enter the base which was an objective only they did not realise the hole in the wall and I was able to lay down some devastating fire through this gap badly damaging what had been the strongest Mech in the field.

Marsians rushing forward to seize the objective. My Marines would land up giving these a hard time. Having managed to get them to the wall and then using their jump packs  pop over the wall to blaze away at the Mechs - lucky shots indeed. These chaps will certainly be promoted.

The Earthling forces initial approach was conducted cautiously, indeed they overcame the Marsians with little need for maneuver.

The Earthling Marines, one squad of these was lost to enemy fire. The first Earthling casualties. We will remember them...

These EM4 Mechs are great I divided mine up and painted the Marsians a metallic green and Earthlings a metallic blue. Must take better pics of them once bases are done (still considering hexagonal bases which may give a more Sci-Fi feel) and get another set.

The hunt for a Mech like set of Sci-Fi rules will need to continue...
